What will this guide cover?

Module 1 - Taking Charge of Your Fertility

It’s been 3 ,6…12 months since you began trying to conceive and each month you are greeted with 1 line on the home pregnancy test. You are not sure if it is time to go see a doctor yet or if you are just being a pessimist. It’s understandable to struggle to take a step forward into exploring if there’s an issue with your fertility. It’s OK to be concerned! And it is also OK to voice that concern!

Module 2 - Diagnostics

You overcame your fear and are finished with the first consultation. You are now ready to get to the root of the problem. Before you can get any answers, you and your partner will undergo diagnostic tests. If you did not have blood work completed prior to your initial consultation, both partners will likely have it drawn the day of your first visit. Additional blood work for the female may be needed on day 2 or 3 of the next menstrual cycle.

Module 3 - Male Diagnostics

When a couple is attempting to conceive, two factors are at play in achieving a pregnancy, sperm and egg. It is a common misconception that infertility is a woman’s problem. But the reality is according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), nearly 50% of those with a fertility diagnosis have a male factor diagnosis. Approximately 20%–30% are solely male factor and it is a contributing factor in another 20%–30% of couples facing infertility.

Module 4 - Understanding Hormones

Based on our understanding of the menstrual cycle, you can now see why hormones can be a vital part of infertility treatments. The main goal of hormone treatments is to allow for egg maturation and ovulation. Mature eggs that begin the process of ovulation means an increased chance of getting pregnant.

Module 5 - Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

This is a simple procedure that places the sperm directly inside the uterus. The idea is the closer the sperm is to the eggs, the increased chance of fertilization. IUI can be done with a woman’s normal cycle, or with hormone medications.

Module 6 - In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF, or In Vitro Fertilization, is a process where eggs are fertilized by sperm outside the body in a laboratory setting, creating embryos. These embryos are then monitored to ensure proper development and can undergo genetic testing if desired. Once ready, the embryo(s) are either frozen for future use or transferred into the uterus with the hope of establishing a healthy pregnancy. The process can offer a path to parenthood for individuals or couples, including single parents by choice and LGBTQ+ families, hoping to grow their families with fertility treatments.

We know it was hard to admit that something was wrong, speak to your doctor and then take the next steps toward figuring out what is causing these challenges. Deep down you know that you are not the only one experiencing this but it still feels like you are alone, because everyone around you seems to be pregnant or pushing a baby carriage.

Isn’t it weird that before you began embarking on this journey, you never noticed it, but now all of the sudden babies and pregnancies seem to be all you see? The reality though is that you are not alone: 1 in 6 other women and men are facing this struggle.
